Teaching Youngsters How to Make Good Decisions: A Skill That Shapes Their Future

“The quality of our decisions determines the quality of our lives.” Yet, decision-making is rarely taught directly. We expect children and teenagers to “know better,” but making good decisions is one of the most complex skills the brain develops.

Every day, young people make hundreds of decisions:

* Should I finish my homework or scroll through my phone?
* Should I tell the truth or avoid getting into trouble?
* Should I join my friends or follow my own values?
* Should I react immediately or pause and think?

These everyday choices gradually shape habits, character, relationships, and future opportunities.

The encouraging news is that decision-making is a skill—and like any skill, it can be developed with guidance and practice.

Why Decision-Making Can Be Difficult

The adolescent brain is still under construction.

The prefrontal cortex, responsible for planning, reasoning, impulse control, and weighing consequences, continues to mature into the mid-twenties. Meanwhile, the emotional centres of the brain, including the amygdala and reward systems, are highly active.

This means youngsters often:

* Act before thinking.
* Seek immediate rewards.
* Struggle to predict long-term consequences.
* Feel intense peer pressure.
* Find it difficult to regulate emotions during stressful situations.

Understanding this helps adults shift from asking, “Why would they do that?” to “How can I help them think through this?”

Good Decisions Begin with Self-Awareness

Before children can choose wisely, they need to recognise what is happening inside themselves.

Help them notice:

* What am I feeling?
* What does my body feel like?
* Am I tired, hungry, anxious, or overwhelmed?
* Am I reacting or responding?

A child whose nervous system is dysregulated is less likely to access logical thinking. Emotional regulation is therefore the foundation of sound decision-making.

Movement breaks, breathing exercises, hydration, adequate sleep, and sensory regulation can all improve the brain’s ability to think clearly.

Teach Them to Pause

Many poor decisions happen because there is no pause between impulse and action.

Encourage youngsters to develop a simple habit:

STOP

* S – Stop.
* T – Take a breath.
* O – Observe what is happening.
* P – Proceed with intention.

Even a five-second pause allows the thinking brain to catch up with the emotional brain.

Introduce a Decision-Making Framework

Rather than giving answers, guide children through questions such as:

1. What is the problem?
2. What choices do I have?
3. What could happen if I choose each option?
4. How might this affect me?
5. How might this affect others?
6. Which choice fits my values?

Initially, adults can think aloud while solving everyday problems. Over time, youngsters begin asking these questions independently.

Teach Consequences, Not Fear

Avoid using threats to control behaviour.

Instead, help children explore natural consequences.

For example:

Instead of saying:

“If you don’t study, you’ll fail.”

Try:

“What do you think might happen if you leave your studying until the last minute?”

This encourages ownership rather than obedience.

Build Decision-Making Through Everyday Opportunities

Decision-making improves with practice.

Allow children to choose:

* Which book to read.
* How to organise their homework.
* What healthy snack to prepare.
* Which activity to do first.
* How to solve a disagreement.

Small decisions prepare them for bigger ones later in life.

Discuss Mistakes Without Shame

Every poor decision is a learning opportunity.

After emotions have settled, ask:

* What happened?
* What were you thinking at that moment?
* What worked?
* What didn’t?
* What would you do differently next time?

Reflection strengthens the brain pathways needed for future decision-making.

The Role of Movement

As a movement-based educator, I often observe that children who struggle with balance, coordination, retained primitive reflexes, or sensory processing may also find planning, organisation, and impulse control more challenging.

Movement supports the development of:

* Executive functioning
* Bilateral integration
* Body awareness
* Emotional regulation
* Attention
* Cognitive flexibility

When the nervous system becomes more organised, thoughtful decision-making often becomes easier.

Teach Values Alongside Skills

Children don’t simply need strategies; they need an internal compass.

Regular conversations about values such as:

* Honesty
* Kindness
* Respect
* Responsibility
* Courage
* Integrity

help youngsters evaluate choices beyond immediate rewards.

A useful question is:

“Which decision helps you become the kind of person you want to be?”

Be the Model

Children learn far more from watching adults than from listening to lectures.

When you make decisions, think aloud:

* “I feel frustrated, but I’m going to take a minute before I reply.”
* “There are two choices here. Let’s think about the consequences.”
* “I made a mistake. Here’s what I learned.”

These everyday moments quietly teach wisdom.

Final Thoughts

Our goal is not to raise children who always make perfect decisions.

Our goal is to raise young people who pause, think critically, regulate their emotions, learn from mistakes, and make increasingly responsible choices.

Decision-making is not a single lesson—it is a lifelong habit built through experience, reflection, guidance, and a well-regulated nervous system.

When we teach children how to think rather than what to think, we equip them with one of the greatest gifts for life.

“Every decision is like casting a vote for the person you are becoming.”
