In this month’s brain boosting feature, we’re excited to introduce you to a fun,
creative and incredibly beneficial activity – Double Doodle Play, a Brain Gym ® activity
that encourages both sides of the brain and body to work together.
What is Double Doodle Play?
Double Doodle Play is a bilateral drawing activity where a child (or adult) holds a
marker in each hand and draws simultaneously – creating mirror-like images across
the center of the page. This may look and seem simple, but it’s much more than
“two- handed scribbling”. Each stroke helps connect the left and right sides of the
brain-building co-ordination, visual awareness and whole body integration.
Why Double Doodle Matters?
Double Doodle Play supports key developmental skills:
Bilateral co-ordination – Strengthens the ability to use both hands together in a
co-ordinated way
Eye-Hand Integration – Improves fine motor control and visual tracking
Spatial Awareness – Helps us understand orientation, distance and
symmetrical patterns
Brain Connectivity – Encourages communication between the brain’s
hemispheres, which is helpful for focus and learning.
Creativity & Relaxation – Fosters expression and calm through playful art.
Since the process of doing the drawing activity matters more than the product or
output, all can participate regardless of artistic skills.
Try it at Home!
You just require two markers or crayons or pencils (different colours make it more
fun!)
Large sheet of paper (landscape orientation works best)
Optional: use a masking tape to hold the paper in place.
Sit with the paper centered in front of you.
Hold one marker/crayon/pencil in each hand and begin drawing at the same time
with both hands moving outward in mirrored and flowing shapes.
Explore making different shapes, flowers or simply let your imagination lead the way!
Celebrate effort and exploration – don’t worry about perfection.
Pair the double doodle activity with music for added rhythm, focus and fun.
Final Thought –
Double Doodle Play is more than art – it is a joyful way to build brain co-ordination,
calm attention and confidence in learners of all ages.
Invite your child or students to grab two markers/crayons and let both hands play
and watch their creativity unfold!
