Nourishing Our Senses: Receiving, Growing, and Giving

“The way we experience the world is shaped by the way we nourish our senses.”
We often think of nourishment as the food we eat. While food is essential, true nourishment goes far beyond our plate. Every day, our senses are constantly receiving information from the world around us. What we see, hear, touch, smell, taste, and experience through movement influences not only how we feel, but also how our brain functions, how we learn, how we relate to others, and how we experience life itself.
When our senses are nourished, we feel more connected, calm, resilient, and alive. And when we are well nourished, we naturally become a source of nourishment for others.
The Circle of Nourishment
Life is a beautiful circle of receiving and giving.
A mother nourishes her baby with her own milk. The earth nourishes us with food. Trees nourish us with oxygen and shade. Teachers nourish young minds with knowledge. Friends nourish our hearts with kindness. Even a smile, a gentle touch, or a listening ear can nourish another person in ways we may never fully realise.
Every one of us has the capacity to nourish the world.
But before we can give fully, we must first receive.
When we nourish ourselves—physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, and through our senses—we have greater energy, compassion, creativity, and joy to share with those around us.
Pause for a moment and reflect:
●Do I feel nourished by my environment?
●Am I supported emotionally?
●Am I stimulated intellectually?
●Does what I see each day bring me peace and inspiration?
●Do I create moments that nourish my body, mind, and spirit?
Gratitude reminds us that nourishment is already present in many forms. Sometimes it comes through people, sometimes through nature, and sometimes through quiet moments of stillness.
Nourishing Our Sense of Touch
Touch is the very first sense to develop and the first language we understand.
Long before we understand words, we understand the comfort of being held, the warmth of a loving embrace, and the reassurance of gentle touch.
Throughout life, touch continues to regulate our nervous system. Feeling the grass beneath our feet, dipping our hands into cool water, hugging a loved one, stroking the bark of a tree, gardening, or even holding a warm cup of tea can help us slow down and reconnect with the present moment.
Touch reminds us that we belong.
Nourishing Our Vision
Our eyes were designed for movement, curiosity, and exploration—not simply for staring at screens.
Natural daylight, looking toward distant horizons, watching clouds drift by, observing birds in flight, or noticing the colours and patterns in nature all nourish our visual system.
Vision is much more than seeing clearly. It is about how our brain interprets the world around us. When we spend time outdoors and allow our eyes to move naturally, we also support attention, learning, posture, balance, and overall well-being.
Sometimes the greatest gift we can give our eyes is simply to pause… and truly notice the beauty that already surrounds us.
Nourishing Our Sense of Smell
Smell has a remarkable connection with memory and emotion.
The fragrance of fresh flowers, the smell of rain on dry earth, herbs growing in the garden, freshly baked bread, spices in the kitchen, or the familiar scent of a loved one’s home can instantly evoke comfort and joy.
Taking time to breathe deeply and notice the natural fragrances around us invites us into the present moment.
Every breath becomes an opportunity to nourish both body and mind.
Nourishing Our Hearing
Just as our eyes benefit from natural light and our muscles thrive on movement, our ears and hearing system also need nourishment.
Healthy hearing is about much more than our ears. It depends on the brain, nervous system, circulation, balance system, and our ability to filter meaningful sounds from the environment.
In today’s fast-paced world, we are surrounded by constant noise. Yet our hearing flourishes when it experiences a healthy balance of sound and silence.
The gentle sounds of birds singing, leaves rustling in the breeze, flowing water, meaningful conversations, uplifting music, and moments of quiet reflection all nourish our auditory system.
Remember, we do not simply hear with our ears—we hear with our brain. Every healthy habit that supports the brain also supports our ability to listen, communicate, and connect.
Listening is one of the greatest gifts we can offer another human being.
Nourishing Our Sense of Taste
Taste allows us to experience nourishment with awareness and appreciation.
When we slow down to savour a meal, notice flavours, textures, temperatures, and aromas, eating becomes much more than simply satisfying hunger—it becomes an act of mindfulness and gratitude.
Colourful fruits and vegetables, wholesome grains, nourishing proteins, healthy fats, herbs, and spices not only feed our bodies but also delight our senses.
Perhaps the greatest nourishment comes when we share a meal with family or friends. Food has always been a way of building relationships and strengthening community.
Nourishing Through Movement
Two often-overlooked senses quietly influence everything we do.
Our vestibular system helps us balance, move through space, and feel secure in gravity.
Our proprioceptive system gives us body awareness, helping us know where our body is without looking.
Every walk in nature, every stretch, every dance, every Brain Gym® movement, every cross-crawl, and every opportunity to climb, balance, or simply move nourishes these systems.
Movement is not merely exercise.
Movement is nourishment for the brain.
As the Brain Gym philosophy reminds us, movement is the door to learning.
Becoming Nourishment for Others
When our senses are awake and nourished, life becomes richer.
We notice beauty more easily.
We listen more deeply.
We touch with kindness.
We appreciate simple pleasures.
We move with greater ease.
We become calmer, more present, and more connected—not only with ourselves, but also with those around us.
The circle continues.
We receive.
We grow.
We give.
Our words nourish.
Our gestures nourish.
Our presence nourishes.
Our love nourishes.
Every act of kindness becomes nourishment for another person.
Perhaps today, pause for a moment and ask yourself:
How will I nourish my senses today?
Then ask one more question:
How can I become nourishment for someone else?
When we nourish ourselves with intention, we become a source of health, hope, and healing for our families, our communities, and the world around us.
After all, a well-nourished person doesn’t simply live well—they help others flourish too.
